Title: Essential steps to winning an Academy Award

Synopsis: In a two and a half hour master class, Academy Executive Committee Branch Member Ron Diamond explains the rules for submission, voting procedures and pitfalls that have caused some films to be disqualified. Discussion of the attributes and qualities of four films is discussed to give attendees greater insight as to what kinds of films have historically gained the attention of the Academy and why other films have not.

Biography: Animation producer, distributor and curator Ron Diamond founded and runs Acme Filmworks in Los Angeles, CA, one of the preeminent independent animation studios since 1990 creating seminal animated works with such directors as Michael Dudok de Wit, Christopher Hinton, Janet Perlman, Raimund Krumme, Caroline Leaf, Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis, Aleksandra Korejwo and dozens of other animators from around the globe. Diamond has produced commercials, main title sequence, short films, a television series and several animated features, including The 17th Annual Animation Show of Shows, the International Tournee of Animation and the Animation Celebration. Diamond has served on numerous festival juries, curated multiple programs, lectured at numerous universities, exhibited Acme Filmworks production art work on four continents and has been in attendance at dozens of  international animation festivals small and large. Diamond is also the co founder of Animation World Network, the founder of The Animation Show of Shows, Inc. and organizes the annual Pre-Oscar tour of the leading animation studios for animated short film Oscar® nominees.

Title: My creative process

Synopsis: An explanation of my creative process throughout my trilogy on the themes of fear, childhood, difference, shadows and light:
I – Shadows and fears: my first film “Night” (animation engraving on plaster plates);
II – Light and difference: “Tragic Story with Happy Ending”, engraving with black ink on paper, the centerpiece of the trilogy;
III – Third episode of the trilogy – leaving childhood behind and self acceptance: “Kali, The Little Vampire”, digital engraving);
IV – Conclusion: Self analysis of my creative process and its steps, taking as an example the current project I’m working.

Biography: Graduated in Painting, by Escola de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto, in 1998. In 1992, she started working at Filmógrafo – Studio Porto Animated Film Studio, as an animator in several films of Abi Feijo. From 1996 Pessoa begins to direct and animate her own films, including a trilogy dedicated to childhood’s theme: “Night”, “Tragic Story With Happy Ending” and “Kali the Little Vampire”. Her films have been honored with over 80 awards and distinctions throughout the world, including: Grand-Prix Annecy 2006; Grand Prix du Jury South by Southwest, 2007; nomination for the Cartoon d’Or 2006; Oscars Short-list 2007; Hiroshima Prize 2012; 1st Prize Animated Short Film, Chicago International Children’s Film Festival; The Golden Gate Award for Best Short Animation – 56th San Francisco International Film Festival – USA; nomination for the Annie Awards 2013; appointment for the Cartoon D’OR 2013; selection in Golden Nights at the Grand Theatre of UNESCO Paris, 2014; etc.

Title: Blessed independence

Synopsis: Independent animation studios are continuously challenged to pull through a volatile and deeply globalized market, where resistant strategies are not many. In this masterclass, Jossie Malis, independent filmmaker and chief of Zumbakamera studio, will present his specific work methodology with examples of creative processes and his experience developing awarded series “Bendito Machine” among others projects, besides also analyzing other financing, distribution and tactics ways to survive as an independent director and not die in the process.

Biografia: Jossie Malis (1976). Director at Zumbakamera Studio, plays his professional activity in the island of Majorca (Spain). With a special passion for imaginary that incorporates machinery and the cosmos, he devoted himself since the age of 15 to the creation of short films, music videos and series, such as the award-winning “Blessed Machine”, in addition to engaging in all kinds of audiovisual projects. Malis attended several international festivals as a jury member and his films were selected at various festivals around the world such as Annecy, Sitges, CINANIMA, BAF, Hiroshima, SICAF or Fantastic Fest, among others. His works are acute comments to human beings and their weaknesses, machinery, fears and to the mysteries of the universe.

Title: Students Films/ Graduation Films – the involvement of students and teachers and how students are accompanied in the process.

Synopsis: In this masterclass, Michelle Nardone will show samples of the work developed at The Animation Workshop and explain students work process and how they are accompanied. The Animation Workshop is part of University College VIA, and is associated with an international companies, artists and education network.

Biography: Michelle studied integral studies at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco and holds a Montessori Foundation teaching credential. Since the mid-90s she has been exploring the medium of animation. Michelle was involved in starting up the Bachelor Department at The Animation Workshop in 2003 and has been the driving force behind its development ever since.

Title: #LINGO: at the backstage of Animation

Synopsis: This masterclass will present #LINGO animated short film through different stages of production – storyboard, animatic, character study and digital animation. They will also be demonstrated optical toys and presented the making-book made from the film.

Biography: Born in 1991, in Torres Vedras. He began drawing and watching cartoons at a very early age. Graduated in Plastic Arts and Multimedia from the Instituto Politécnico de Santarém, his interest for the animated cinema led him to the Master’s Degree in Illustration and Animation at the Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e Ave. At the present moment, he works as a freelancer in both areas, under the name Vicent Nirõ. His first short film #LINGO, directed in the end of his master’s degree, was awarded the Young Portuguese Director Award CINANIMA 2015 and the Award for Students of Prémio Nacional de Animação 2015. It was also awarded at the festivals Caminhos do Cinema Português, Leiria Film Fest and Área de Contenção.

Título: Animation and videogames: When two worlds collide.

Sinopse: In an era of constant technological evolution two worlds are doomed to collide. Many professionals works in both sectors and animation companies make video games and vice versa. The boundaries are less clear and new companies born with no labels, they are focused on making great content no matter the platform is. We will talk about transmedia, storytelling, crowdfunding, VR, AR, gamification and disruptive technologies through some great case studies to understand this ever changing world.

Biografia: Director and creator of 3D Wire, International Animation, Video Games and New Media Market (Segovia, Spain) since 2009; and co-Director and creator of Bridging the Gap, Animation Lab (Valencia, Spain), in its two editions.
