Each year the lovely Portuguese seaside town of Espinho hosts CINANIMA International Animated Film Festival. This November from the 11th to the 17th the 37th edition of the oldest Portuguese film festival will once again bring to Espinho a wealth of animation films with the best of what was produced over the year.
With only three months to go until the start of the festival the first preview is quite exciting: several hundred films have been presented to the competition, and the various juries are already hard at work nominating the films for each of the categories. At the same time this year will see some changes with the base organization and positioning of the Festival as determined by an Organizing Committee that welcomed new members and a new Executive Committee.
As for the films in competition and this is of course the main issue, as CINANIMA is a competition Festival the Organization Committee is quite confident of its success. 840 films were sent from 52 different countries. Some European countries like France with 121 films and the United Kingdom with 108 films that lead the countries with the most films present should be no surprise, but this year, we also have significant presence from Belgium (21 films), Holland (17 films), Italy (13 films) and of course the Russian animation with a total of 23 new films. We could also highlight Germany and Northern European countries with 36 films and Spain that presented a total of 36 short films and one feature film.
The Portuguese animation films also have a strong presence at the 2013 CINANIMA with a total of 42 films, 17 of which are entries for the best Portuguese film and 25 for the Young Directors awards.
Looking outside of the European frontiers we have films from Canada (31) and also films from Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay and the USA. Australia with 8 films and a presence of countries like South Korea Taiwan and Japan along with Tunisia, Bangladesh, Vietnam and India show that CINANIMA is a truly international festival.
Two juries will have the task of nominating around 100 films for the 8 categories between August 23 and September 8. CINANIMA will be back in Espinho again like every year since 1976 for yet another animated film festival jointly organized by the Nascente Cooperative and the Espinho Municipality.
