Record of Portuguese films in the International Competition at CINANIMA 2017

The work of the Selection Jury of CINANIMA – International Animated Film Festival of Espinho – is now completed, so it’s time to reveal a little bit of what you will see in November, at Centro Multimeios, in Espinho.

Of the 1338 films submitted, from 67 countries, the Festival’s programming department selected 26 hours of films, which were screened for the Selection Jury, constituted by Maria João Martins, Manuel Matos Barbosa and Paulo D’Alva.

This is definitely the year of the Portuguese films in the International Competition. In fact, in 41 editions, CINANIMA has never announced six Portuguese works competing for the Grand Prize CINANIMA 2017 – Short Films/Espinho City Award, as well as well-known names in the world of animation. “Sr. Extraterrestre”, by Jorge Ribeiro; “Água Mole” by Laura Gonçalves e Xá; “Das Gavetas Nascem Sons”, by Vítor Hugo; “É Preciso Que Eu Diminua”, by Pedro Serrazina; “Surpresa”, by Paulo Patrício and “Tocadora”, by Joana Imaginário are the six short films of the 43 works included in the International Competition.

As far as this Competition is concerned, it is important to point out that, compared to 2016, this year CINANIMA has received 20 feature films submissions, an additional five compared to 2016. In this 41st Edition of CINANIMA, in the category of feature film, we will be having four films from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany (2 works) and the United Kingdom.

Regarding the National Competition, in which CINANIMA has particular pride in its undeniable role as a leader in the promotion of the author animation, the Festival will include 10 films running for the António Gaio Award and 16 that are running for the Young Portuguese Director Award.
