Portuguese Animation with Five Films Running for the Oscars

The Portuguese animation starts well in 2021: the first list of the 96 nominees for the category BEST ANIMATION SHORT FILM OF THE OSCARS 2021 has already been announced and there are five Portuguese short films and / or with Portuguese collaboration on the list, of these two were awarded at CINANIMA 2020.

ALTÖTTING, by Andreas Hykade, a co-production between the National Film Board of Canada, Studio Film Bilder (Germany) and Portuguese producer Ciclope Filmes. There is also the participation of Regina Pessoa in the film team (artistic direction and animation). This film was the winner of the Grand Prize of the 44th Edition of CINANIMA.

ELO, by Alexandra Ramires, produced by studio Bando à Parte and co-produced by studio Providences (France) won the António Gaio Award – Best Film in National Competition.

PURPLEBOY, by Alexandre Siqueira, produced by the studio Bando à Parte and co-produced by the studios Ambiances … asbl (Belgium), Luna Blue Film (Belgium) and Rainbox Productions (France) was in international competition at the Festival.

Let’s not forget that ELO and PURPLEBOY were distinguished at the NATIONAL ANIMATION AWARD 2020 (November, Casa das Artes do Porto). ELO won in the Professional Films Category and Audience Award and PURPLEBOY was distinguished with an Honorable Mention also in the Professional Films Category.

In February, the short list of ten nominees will be announced, with only five being selected for the 93rd edition of the Oscars. The finalists will be known on March the 15th, 2021.
