Portuguese Works Stand Out in the Selection for the 44th Edition

The deadline for submitting films to CINANIMA – International Film Festival of Animation in Espinho has ended – now is the time to reveal that around 1100 films, from 69 countries, have been registered and will be screened and selected by the Festival’s programming team and by the Short Film Selection Jury; Selection of Student Films; Selection of Feature Films and Selection of Portuguese Films.

Another Festival, another top three of countries with films in selection: as usual, France leads with 189; followed by Portugal by 79, a fact that we particularly appreciate, and 70 works from the United Kingdom.

It should be noted that the category with the largest number of works – 337 – is Films with More than 5 up to 24 minutes, followed by a slight difference from Student films (333). The notoriety and visibility that CINANIMA offers the winner of the Grand Prix, which automatically enters the list of Oscar’s candidates, seems to continue to go unnoticed by thousands of animators, which are still trying their luck at the third oldest festival in the world.

Over 44 years, tens of thousands of films have passed through the Festival, coming from the most different points of the world. In 2020, CINANIMA receives works from Bangladesh, Costa Rica, Macedonia, Malaysia, Morocco, Mozambique, Moldova, Kenya, Syria and Uzbekistan. We highlight the fact that we received 20 films from Iran, because they have effectively marked an increasing presence at the Festival.

In what concerns the National Competition, the increase of Portuguese films is again underlined, with 81 works in 2020, 21 more than in 2019. It is with great pride that the Festival congratulates the efforts and dedication of the directors and producers, therefore making our country the third most representative in the 2020’s selection.

CINANIMA takes place from the 9th to the 15thNovember, in Espinho, contemplating the streaming online of some screenings and other activities, due to the current situation.
