Symposium – Perspectives on Portuguese Animation

1. The portrait, as a starting point for the analysis of identity contexts where the individual look and the pictorial mental image of the author are represented in the animated film through the concept of visuality or visual construction of the social and in particular how these are manifested in the works of the authors.

By: Cátia Peres. director, researcher, PhD in animation and Professor at the University of Algarve. Researcher at the UNIDCOM Research Center. He regularly publishes in newspapers and animation conferences.


2. The documentary as an approach to the animated film from the point of view of realizing its characteristics and the presence of elements in the authors’ works. Consequently, the counterpoint of the symbolic game as opposed to the documentary approach is also addressed.

By: Camilla Kater. Animator, screenwriter, director and teacher from São Paulo, Brazil. He directed, wrote and animated the animated documentary short film CARNE (2019), selected in more than 250 festivals such as Locarno, TIFF, Annecy, IDFA and with more than 95 national and international awards, being qualified for the Oscar® 2021. Kater holds a BA in Social Communication (Medialogy) from Unicamp, a degree in Film & TV Production from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge (UK) and recently received an Erasmus Mundus Masters Scholarship for the RE: ANIMA Animation program.


3. The design of female characters in the authors’ works as a starting point for a reflection on the communication of identity through drawing and the particularities of the graphic representation of the female in the context of author animation.

Por: Gabriela Sá. Gabriela Sá é uma artista digital 2D atuante nas áreas de animação, ilustração e narrativas visuais. Tem uma licenciatura em Artes Plásticas – Multimédia pela FBAUP, um mestrado em Ilustração e Animação pelo IPCA e é candidata ao doutoramento em Design da FBAUP, inserida no grupo de investigação do ID+. A sua investigação e projeto atual intitula-se como, “Sisterhood: Designing Female Relationships on Mainstream Animation Media of the 21st Century”.


4. As principais estratégias formais gráficas e de composição de movimento adotadas na filmografia das duas autoras, quer enquanto suporte da economia de enunciação, quer como proposta estética diferenciadora.
