Paul Bush, a director known for his experimental films that challenged the limits of animated film as well as fiction and documentary, was born in London in 1956. By fusing aspects of surrealism and abstractionism, his works explored unusual animation techniques and cutting-edge aesthetic approaches, challenging the standard conventions of animation.
He co-wrote and directed a number of critically praised short and feature films in the 1980s. In South London, he established a film workshop while teaching film from 1981 until 1993. He lectured on Goldsmiths’ visual arts course from 1995 to 2001.
‘His comedy,‘ (1994), ‘The Albatross‘ (1998), ‘Room 2‘ (2001) and most recently, ‘Orgiastic Hyper-Plastic‘ (2021) have been awarded at CINANIMA. These accomplishments were made possible by his distinct style and innovative approach to the arts. CINANIMA’s friend Paul Bush is a significant figure in our history. The humour, subtlety, and skill in his works captivated us and demonstrated his immense brilliance. In the course of his career, he paid us multiple visits, served as a jury member, workshops and masterclasses advisor, sharing his knowledge in extensive and engaging dialogues.
This is our tribute to a great artist’s memory as well as to a decent, happy, and perpetually jovial man. His art, like our friendship, is timeless, and he will always be remembered through his unparalleled legacy and on our screens.
So Long, Paul.
